Facts
***A new parent/child communication series, FACTS, provides the skills, information and support parents need, along with an opportunity to share an important experience with their teen. The FACTS program assists families in the areas of communication, values and the advantages of premarital abstinence. Topics that are covered include sexual pressure; self-respect; parties and dating; refusal skills; risk-taking behavior; and distinguishing between infatuation and love. The material will provide families with the information and the opportunity to work on important areas in their teen's life and provide parents with the support and reassurance of other parents. FACTS can also be facilitated for parents only.
PARENTS are the most powerful influence in a child's life so tell them how and what you feel about sex.
It's not easy, but…
* Being honest with yourself
* Being a role model
* Being informed
* Being willing to share your thoughts about sex
* Being prepared for disagreement
and
* Being direct without preaching or name-calling will help ensure your success
THINK
-
about what you want to convey
-
Make sure your facts are correct
-
Establish a relationship of openness and trust
and
LISTEN
to your child.
BUT…Don't jump to conclusions and while humor is great, don't laugh at the questions your child may ask. There's a lot of misinformation floating around about sexuality. Let your child know there are no dumb questions.
Be an "askable" parent.
It could make all the difference in your child's life.
